Maldives Not Under Invasion Threat Says Prez Yameen

The Maldivian defense ministry has sent a strong message to India that it is not likely to require any military help from India to resolve its current political crisis. This is after India proposed military intervention to solve its crisis and the Maldivian President made an open statement to his countrymen stating that they need not fear about national sovereignty as the nation is not likely to be invaded by anyone.  This statement was issued just days after China’s foreign ministry issued a formal warning to international community and India to stay away from interfering in internal affairs of Maldives as the tiny island nation was quite capable of resolving its own issues.

This statement reflects current Maldivian president Yameen’s endeavor to consolidate his position in the nation. The president’s colleague Dr. Mohamed Shainee who was in Saudi Arabia as a part of his envoy was assured New Delhi that situation was in control and that India can track developments of Maldives but should not get directly involved in internal affairs. During an interview he stated that, as the nation has successfully managed its political crises in the past it would most probably be able to manage the current situation too. As India is one of its closest neighbors it has every right to be concerned but Maldives can manage the situation on its own. He also stated that China is concerned about the law and order situation in Maldives as it has invested in the nation’s development projects.

This was after a state of emergency was called by President Yameen following a court order that ordered immediate release of nine opposition leaders along with former president Mohamed Nasheed. After the two judges that delivered this verdict were arrested and an appeal was sent out by Mr. Nasheed to international leaders for military aid from nations like the US, India and the United Nations, all have been pushing current Maldivian president for restoration of democracy.
