In the year 2018, Maruti Suzuki is going to be the largest utility vehicle company in the country. The company has surpassed number one company Mahindra & Mahindra (M & M) of this segment and took away the possession on this title this year. Only a month sales data is available in the year 2018 and compared to M & M, the Maruti Utility Vehicle segment has reached 21,700 units.
In the last five years, the performance of Maruti and M & M is considerably changing. While Maruti has increased the market share in the Utility Vehicle segment thanks to vehicles such as Vitara Brezza and S Cross, the new vehicles such as Scorpio, and SUV 500 didn’t get an appreciable response from the customers. Maruti’s Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) RS Kalsi said that its market share in the Utility Vehicle segment was 28% between April 2017 and January 2018.
Five years ago, Maruti’s share in this segment was just 7%. Due to good performance in this segment, Maruti’s market share in the Passenger Vehicle Market has crossed 50%. At the same time, in the last five years, the market share in M & M Utility Vehicle segment has come down from 55% to 25%. Kalsi said that according to the expectation of the customers, the early production of the product in the market helped the company to gain dominance. Maruti developed Brezza, which has become the country’s top-selling SUV. Kalsi said that this product was prepared on the basis of customer feedback, which wanted a sporty and fun to drive SUV.
It is said that in the next financial year, the M & M will get the top position in the UV Segment. In the year 2019, Maruti is also going to launch new Ertiga. This means that the road for M & M will not be easy.
